Chapter 11

Duncan glanced at the blond woman in the rearview mirror. If there was one thing he had noticed about her, it was that she was always in control. And he found himself wondering what it would take for Sabrina’s control to slip. He wagered it would take a lot. The control she possessed she had perfected for many years already, and even if she was in a situation where she could let go, she would probably find it difficult to do so.

He told the ladies what had happened to Michael and Stephanie at the hands of Ambrosia and Jack, the alpha panther.

“Panther, like Steven.” Julianne uttered the words like a statement, but Duncan could hear the unspoken question in her voice.

He glanced at her. The woman who had his brain almost short-circuiting from lust. It was sheer luck that he decided to put on a loose shirt before leaving. At least it made his condition less obvious. Showing off his hard cock wasn’t something he relished doing when he wasn’t in the act of pleasing a woman. But the knowledge that he would take Julianne to his bed later was playing havoc with his control.

“I don’t believe there’s any connection between Steven and Jack. From what I could tell, Steven isn’t an alpha, and his accent places him in London. I don’t think Ambrosia would care one whit about him. Her goal is to increase her own power, and an alpha has the most power in a pack or, in the case of panthers, a clan. I wouldn’t worry too much about Steven right now. The chance of him finding you while you’re in Scotland with your phone turned off is miniscule.”

Julianne sighed. “I guess, but I still don’t understand why he wants me back. We were never that good together and with his looks, if not for his personality, I’m sure he would have no trouble finding someone else.”

A burning sensation flared in his chest, and Duncan inwardly swore. Julianne saying that Steven was good-looking made his fur itch beneath his skin, or at least that was what it felt like. He realized it was just his pride taking a hit, but he felt a strong compulsion to prove to her who was the better man. And it sure as hell wasn’t the panther.

“Some men just want what they can’t have.” The irritation in Sabrina’s voice made Duncan look at her in the mirror. It sounded like she was speaking from experience. “That might well be the case with Steven. He got more and more possessive toward the end of your relationship. Probably in response to you losing interest in him. A man like him doesn’t take that kind of rejection well, and he wants to prove that he can get you back.”

Julianne turned to her friend. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

Duncan broke into their conversation. “Well, ladies. The water you see straight ahead is Loch Ness. We’ll be at Leith’s house in just a few minutes. Are you ready to meet everyone?”

Smiling, Julianne turned to him.
